Scholarship Descriptions
Marlene Downie Memorial Scholarship for Special Needs Teacher
David Downie III, who is a popular member of our dulcimer community and recipient of “super senior” scholarships himself, is sponsoring this memorial scholarship in honor of his wife, Marlene, to whom he was married for 46-1/2 years. Marlene loved working with special needs children, and also worked with children in outdoor education. After her passing, her husband, David, found solace and new interests in the mountain dulcimer and teaching special needs children to play it. David and his family would like this scholarship to go to a teacher or other person who works with children, especially those children with special needs, teaching them to play mountain dulcimer. This scholarship pays for the recipient’s $325 tuition and recipient is responsible for his/her housing/meals and any other expenses. Recipient may attend any of our morning skill level courses or the Traditional Music for Mountain Dulcimer course.
JoEllen Hudson Memorial Scholarship
JoEllen was a spirited and joy-filled member of our dulcimer community who worked as a teacher and counselor in Alabama elementary schools. She helped many people, young and old alike, to play our instrument. This scholarship is sponsored by members of her “hometown” Shoals Dulcimer Club and her friend Linda Hynson. It is for a newer player of the mountain dulcimer, either adult or aged 12-18*, who has already shown dedication to learning. This scholarship pays for the recipient’s $325 tuition and recipient is responsible for his/her housing/meals and any other expenses. Recipient may attend any of our morning skill level courses or the Traditional Music for Mountain Dulcimer course or the Dulcimer Building course.
The Statland Scholarship for Mountain Dulcimer Teachers
Mountain dulcimer player Alexandra Statland sponsors this scholarship to help developing dulcimer teachers, especially those who require some financial assistance, improve their playing skills and understanding of the instrument. This scholarship pays for the recipient’s $325 tuition and recipient is responsible for his/her housing/meals and any other expenses. Recipient may attend any of our morning skill level courses or the Traditional Music for Mountain Dulcimer course.
The Ron Cyr Memorial Scholarship for a “Super Senior” Dulcimer Player
Ron was an enthusiastic participant attended many of our dulcimer weeks as far back as the1980s and was loved by the many friends he made. He passed away in 2006. The Waterbound Dulcimer Club and his family and friends sponsor this scholarship in Ron’s memory. It is awarded to an enthusiastic Senior Citizen dulcimer player (age 65 or over) who exemplifies continuing to learn even though not a kid, and who encourages others to play. The ideal applicant is a senior player that younger folks want to grow up to be like! This scholarship pays for the recipient’s $325 tuition and recipient is responsible for his/her housing/meals and any other expenses. Recipient may attend any of our morning playing courses.
The Deborah Lubicich Memorial Scholarship
Deborah was a friend who attended several of our dulcimer weeks. After she passed away, her family and friends wanted to sponsor this scholarship in her memory to encourage and help a “young woman player to learn dulcimer.” This scholarship pays for the recipient’s $325 tuition and recipient is responsible for his/her housing/meals and any other expenses. Recipient may attend any of our morning skill level courses or the Traditional Music for Mountain Dulcimer course.
